Judge Joan Synenberg Judge Joan Synenberg

If there is one individual you can describe as always upbeat, on the go—one who constantly creates new goals and reaches out to people, that person is Judge Joan Synenberg.

Raised in Cleveland, Joan Synenberg is a graduate of Mayfield High School where she was very active in student government, high school plays, and as captain of the girl’s track team. After receiving her bachelor’s degree from Cleveland State University, she volunteered with Community Re-Entry and worked her way through law school as a social worker at the Cuyahoga County jail and as a bailiff for former Common Pleas Judge Ann Dyke.

Following law school, Judge Synenberg started her own practice and never looked back. She began what became a stellar 16-year legal career, during which time she represented over 1,000 people. At the time she assumed the bench, she was a partner in the law firm of Synenberg and Synenberg.

Although she never considered becoming a judge, those around her believed she had the qualities of a great judge, being fair and decisive, while at the same time compassionate with all people. As a result, in January 2005, Judge Synenberg was appointed to the Cleveland Municipal Court to fill the seat vacated by the election of Judge Mary Eileen Kilbane to the Eighth District Court of Appeals. She was elected to the seat in November, 2005.

Since she became a judge, Judge Synenberg assumed an active role in the court’s expungement program and has been designated by The Honorable Larry A. Jones, Presiding and Administrative Judge of the court, as an outreach representative of the court to increase public awareness of the expungement process.

Judge Synenberg is currently a board member of the Aids Task Force of Greater Cleveland and the Northeast Ohio Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. She is a member of the Cleveland, Cuyahoga and Ohio Bar Associations and the William K. Thomas Inns of Court. She also serves on the Criminal Justice Advisory Council for Cleveland Marshall College of Law, the Judicial Committee for the Volunteer Lawyers Project and is a past member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. Just recently, she became a member of the welcoming committee for the Cleveland Marshall College of Law.

Judge Synenberg is in the 2006-2007 Class of Leadership Cleveland and is married to Roger Synenberg, her former law partner, who served on the County Board of Elections. Her hobbies include cooking and gardening.
